March 2, 2010
Esteemed League Members,
Yesterday the Florida Legislature started its 2010 session. It will go for nine weeks. We will need your help every step of the way.
While we are well represented there by Ben Wilcox, our governmental consultant, and our able Volunteer Lobby Corps under the direction of State Action Chair and Board Director Marilynn Wills and Rebecca Sager, we need your voice.
League volunteers in Tallahassee have taken on the assignment of following individual areas that align with League interests: protection of voter rights, preserving what is left of growth management laws, tax reform, coastal and water protections, and citizen’s right to petition, among others.
But while they sit in meetings and visit lesislators and aides, the thousands of lobbyists and campaign contributors are travelling to Tallahassee where they will remain during the nine weeks to ensure the voices of the more well entrenched are heard. But what about the voice of the citizens?
Citizens’ voices will only be heard if people like you take the time to speak out. Legislators need to hear from you. And while many of Florida’s citizens have become jaded about politics, the fact is that legislators are interested in what their constituents think and say.
So as League State President, I’m alerting you in advance, to let you know… that over the next nine weeks, you are going to be hearing from us. Regularly. We are going to be asking for you to help. Help through emails, through phone calls, through joining us in Tallahassee or League Legislative Seminar. YOUR VOICE IS NEEDED.
Nine weeks. We’ll keep you up to date with our Capitol Reports ably written by Ben Wilcox. We’ll keep you up to date with short succinct ACTION ALERTS. I ask you…please take the time to respond! We need our armchair activists. We need you. The battle is important, and our children, our forests, our lakes, our streams, our voters depend on you!
Thanking in you advance for being on the League ACTION Team during Legislative Session 2010.
In League,
Deirdre Macnab, President
